My cousin Nikki ran the Columbus Marathon in OH last week. Please visit her blog for complete details. However, note that she ran a 4:00 which is awesome though she would have liked to have been a little faster. She, like the Pilgrims, is feeling the pull to Boston! I wonder how she would do on the Mass Quiz below. Considering she is from Chicago, I would guess not too well.
I am off to race cyclocross today. Should be fun and Anna will have her picture taking device. I will post any good ones or ones of me puking. Enjoy the Oct weather--whatever that is in your neck of the woods.

I take great pride in my roots
Anyone who has ever seen my license plate will attest that I take pride in where I grew up and my family is from. I love New England and especially love to hate Massachusetts. It and New Hampshire are two of the smallest states with the largest political influence. I like how the people are outspoken, vocal and let you know when you piss them off. I can't remember when someone in UT told me I was #1!
Anywho I was forward this How Massachusetts are you? quiz from a teammate. The response I got was (and I can hear the accent when I read it):
Dude! You're 95% from Massachusetts! Me and Sully and Fitzie and Sean are gonna hit Landsdowne tonight after the game, hang out at the Beerworks. I'll pick you up at the Coop at 6.

My fingers are gold...
I was trying to type "cold" and "gold" came out instead. I guess my fingers really are cold though we just got some new insulation in the attic, so the house should be warmer?
Anyway, things are back to normal after traveling a bit. It has been nice to spend time relaxing with Anna! The turnaround from NE to Telluride took its toll on me and I was definitely tired at the ISSW. However, I caught some very interesting papers and talked to some key folks for my PhD. It really comes down to two programs: the more scientific one and the intensive fieldwork one. Both have benefits and I am hoping to visit both. More to come on that as I move forward. I also like the option of a job as it would allow Anna to begin to do more freelance work giving her more time to paint and play. We shall see what is in store in the spring.
As for my Masters, things are progressing well. I have been working to develop a finite element model of crack propogration between a composite sheet and a foam core. It has been difficult--often more painful than banging my head against a wall. My advisor, Dan, just presented some results to the Automotive Composites Consortium this week and they were pleased. I am pleased because I am now handing this project off to someone else to work with thermoplastics. We are going to try to develop methods for bonding them which is difficult. The nice thing about thermoplastics is that they can be recycled. This project is also for the ACC and someone from the group recognized me from my previous work on the Corvette hood when Dan gave an overview to them this week. I am excited to be working in the physical realm again instead of being stuck behind a computer all the time.
Cycling is going well and I am looking forward to more cyclocross in the coming weeks. Then ski season!!! I just got some new boots for the first time in about 10 years. I am not positive that I like them yet, but everything seems right with them. Regardless, I am very, very ready for some of this:

Traveling light
Anna and I had a wonderful, but very short trip back to NH last weekend. We flew out of SLC Thursday evening on what seemed to be the longest flight ever. Anna, bless her heart, gave me the aisle seat. As we came in for a landing, we broke through the fog and it seemed like we were going really fast. Sure enough we waved off and circle for a second attempt. You could cut the tension on the plane with a knife until we were at the gate. This added time to our already behind schedule arrival. We finally made it to the rental car place and they did not have the type of vehicle we were supposed to get, thus we ended up with a bright--I mean bright--red Dodge Magnum.
Friday we picked up Nellie and Peter and drove up to NH to some of the best fall foliage I have seen in years. We had a wonderful time eating Chinese and bowling with Jane, Jerry, Thomas and Karissa. The latter of whom have one of the most beautiful baby girls ever!
Saturday was a gorgeous fall NE day and Jane and Jerry had a party to show off their new
home and for people that were not able to attend the wedding. It was great to see so many people that I had not seen in quite a while. Sunday morning came very early. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed and we missed the AB Memorial ride. I made a quick turnaround and then drove to Telluride for the ISSW workshop where I am now. I am looking forward to being home this weekend! Thanks to Steve and Susan for letting us stay at the Red Dog!

Up, down and around
Well we were supposed to fly east today, but it got bumped to Thursday for reasons I won't get into. The Red Sux dropped to 3rd last night. Other than that it is a bright sunny day here!
I raced cyclocross on Sunday and got some great support from my out-laws. Anna's sister Kari successfully handed up a bottle to me on every lap. Thanks! I would have done even worse with out it. Seriously it was a lot of fun and I had some gusto near the beginning that didn't last as long as I would have liked. Overall , I see some areas to improve my training and had fun. Sam put on a great race and managed to come in 3rd too!

Chris Waddell has a Quickie!
I used to have a pin that said "Nothing beats a Quickie". I was reminded of this pin when I ran into a fellow SOX fan, long-time acquaintance Chris Waddell. Notice the people magazine bit in the link. Anyway, he was at the birthday party of our friend Liz on Sunday evening and broke out of a conversation with not 1 or 2, but 3 women to chat with me. Considering the admiration I have for Chris not only as a ski racer but as a human being, I was pretty honored. I was also reminded why Gardie has long hair.
In other news, I have begun establishing contacts in the snow mechanics and avalanche dynamics world to possibly get a PhD. Then I could be: Jared W. Nelson, PhD--wow!. I will learn more in a couple weeks when I go to the ISSW. This is a pretty exciting field for me and while I don't see it being extremely lucrative, I am pretty sure that Anna and I could live in a place we really wanted to. Speaking of Anna, she turned 25 for the second year in a row yesterday! Both years I said to her, "You only turn 25 once!" Apparently, I can integrate over an area, but have trouble with simple addition.
First cross race in many years is on Sunday. I am sure a report with ensue.
Oh yeah--I wish I were there too Tbird. Thanks for thinking of me!

weather in my neck of the woods
To no one's surprise my favorite season is winter. Summer is out right away--the heat is uncomfortable and I end up retaining water--good times. Spring is great and I love to see things starting to grow. Fall is great too but it is just "a chilly breeze that blows my thoughts to what's to come." (A firm pat on the back to anyone that can name that tune!)
Anway I just awoke to find this:
Things have definitely changed with the arrival of the cold front yesterday afternoon. Looks like they are going to stay cooler.
In other news, there are a muckle of birthdays in coming weeks: Liz and Who is Gardie?!? share a day, Nellie, Mom and Anna. Yes, that is her Mini in the picture.

Roxbury MA (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a Boston courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.
When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Boston Red Sox, whom the boy firmly believes is not capable of beating anyone.
